A table, wall, or the other hand can change how an arm moves and how much work is involved. The source separated simple movements from resistance and task-specific work.
- Assisted and unassisted versions are different tasks, not automatic stages for a particular person.
- A visible arm path does not measure strength, diagnose a shoulder condition, or identify compensation.

Reaching, carrying, dressing, and working involve the shoulder far more often than a set of exercises does. General activity guidance treats strengthening as one category among many kinds of daily movement.
- Everyday reaching and carrying already place varied demands on the shoulder throughout a day.
- Population guidance describes activity categories and does not select a shoulder movement for one person.

Table-supported arm slide
An example of using a surface to support the arm while the trunk and chair provide the base of movement.
Example setupSit at a stable table with the forearm resting on a towel or another surface that can slide easily.
- Begin with the forearm supported and the body facing the table.
- Slide the hand forward as the arm moves away from the body and the trunk stays supported by the chair.
- Slide the hand back toward the starting position without aiming for a target distance.
What can be observedNotice how table support and trunk position alter the arm path; the distance is not a range-of-motion result.

Wall-supported arm slide
An example of raising the arm while a wall provides contact and a visible path.
Example setupStand near a clear wall with the hand or forearm resting on a towel against the surface.
- Begin with the arm supported against the wall at a comfortable starting height.
- Slide the hand upward while maintaining light contact with the wall.
- Slide the hand back down along the same general path.
What can be observedObserve the path and amount of wall support without treating height or symmetry as a readiness decision.

Supported arm rotation
An example of rotating the upper arm while keeping the elbow supported and the movement unloaded.
Example setupSit beside a table with the elbow bent and the forearm supported on a folded towel.
- Keep the upper arm supported as the forearm begins in front of the body.
- Move the forearm through a small arc while the elbow remains near the same place.
- Return the forearm toward the starting position without adding resistance.
What can be observedNotice the difference between rotation and lifting the whole arm; the example does not assess joint quality.

Assisted arm lift
An example of using the other hand to share the work of moving an arm.
Example setupSit or stand with enough clear space for both arms to move and no weight held in either hand.
- Begin with both hands resting in front of the body.
- Use the other hand to help guide one arm upward by a self-chosen amount.
- Lower the arm with the same assistance still available.
What can be observedNotice how much assistance was used without treating the height reached as a range-of-motion result.

Shoulder blade movement
An example of separating movement of the shoulder blade from movement of the whole arm.
Example setupSit or stand with the arms hanging or lightly resting and the trunk in a comfortable position.
- Begin with the arms relaxed and the shoulders in their usual resting position.
- Draw the shoulder blades gently toward each other without lifting the arms.
- Let the shoulder blades return to their resting position.
What can be observedObserve that the shoulder blade can move on its own without treating the movement as posture correction.

Everyday reaching observation
An example of observing a familiar reach with its shelf height, object, and body position visible.
Example setupChoose a familiar reach at home or work and keep the usual object, surface, and standing position.
- Note the height, distance, and object involved in the usual reach.
- Perform the reach in the way it normally happens.
- Note whether the feet, trunk, or other hand took part in the movement.
What can be observedThe note records how a real task is organized and does not grade shoulder function or technique.
